Because it’s cheaper. Personally, I wouldn’t get a cat if I can’t afford to get him higher quality foods, but because a lot of people want a pet but do not want to put in the extra dollar.
Some people say that canned food or higher quality foods (minus the raw foods) are too high in water content. But I personally think that too high in water content is better than too little water.
And I agree that it is partially due to commercial. The idea that kibbles can clean teeth is overly hyped.
I too believe in feeding my cats pretty much only canned wet food…and the occasional tin of tuna for a treat. I have 7 cats and more at any given time because I foster abandoned cats/kittens. The only time I will leave some dry food out, is if I am gone for a long period of time, or on an overnight stay at a friends cottage, etc….then I leave some dry out for munching. I do believe in giving them a d/t (dental bites) as treats… I do believe, to some degree, that it is good for their dental hygiene.
Sometimes it is the cat’s preference for food. Some like the Crunchy dry food, others like the moist food. It also depends on who makes the food. I buy Royal Cannin for Cats for my kitty, and she likes it. They make different nutrients styles for if a cat is indoor vs outdoor, skin care, etc. I buy it at my local pet store. It is a better quality food. My cat prefers dry to moist food.
Take care.
I think quite often it’s because people have been told dry food is good so they just believe it and don’t question it (lets face it, how many people read the ingredients on their food, let alone their cat’s?). It’s pushed by manufacturers as there is more profit margin in dry food, and it’s liked by owners because it’s cheap, easy to store and easy to serve. At one time it was believed that dry food was good for the teeth, and many vets still spout that theory (without any evidence to back it up).
I’ll be honest and admit that I used to believe dry food was good for them. I did feed a good quality dry food and gave them some wet each day (which I fed as a treat) but after doing some research I realised that not only was I mistaken, but it was totally illogical to think that a dry biscuit with a high carbohydrate content was ideal for a cat. So my cats are now fed predominantly wet (one all wet and the other mostly wet with a bit of good quality dry so that he will accept the texture of dry - in case I need to leave out dry in an emergency. he will be fed all wet when he’s older).
My cats won’t eat anything *but* dry food. They turn their nose up at everything else.
Also, I’ve never had a problem with their dental care. I don’t do anything extra, except let them have the food they prefer. Their teeth are healthy. Always been that way.
But it is up to the owner and the cat, as to what the cat is fed.
Yeah, I agree. I think people just find it more convenient–also the knowledge that wet food is actually healthier for cats isn’t widely published, while you see commercials, magazine ads, etc every day advertising how healthy dry foods are…
I also swapped my cats over to a grain-free wet cat food diet, and my Ocicat, who was 2 pounds overweight, dropped down to an ideal 11lbs. They are all much shinier and seem healthier. They almost feel “moist” when you pet them, and even the amount they shed seems to have reduced. It’s great!
Thanks for the tips on tarter control. I’ve been trying to brush my cats’ teeth since swapping them over, without too much success! LOL. I know I wouldn’t be able to do anything with chicken bones/baby ****** as I have pet chickens myself and it would make me sick, but lamb heart may be an option… Do you have any more suggestions?
Best wishes!
EDIT: Thanks RuneAmok, I will have to look into finding some of those products (PlaqueOff, Wysong’s Dentatreat, tooth wipes) next time I’m at the pet store and/or see if I can find them online. Turkey necks…maybe. LOL! Thanks again!
As a former sheep, I can say that I never gave it a though. When I got my first cat I didn’t have a clue about anything.
A few years later I was still ignorant. Oh, I had progressed to the point that I would only buy “serious” cat food like Purina. I was not about to buy cat food with cutesy labeling! LOL What a snob I was - and a stupid one at that.
I bought dry food because it was THERE. It was in your face and inexpensive and easy to feed.

Yo Alex! You can buy chicken necks from some pet stores and probably online like at. Since they’re ready to eat they don’t resemble chicken anymore - if that helps! Or how about turkey necks? Same idea but they’re just a bit larger both in length and diameter. Or you can look into dental supplements such as PlaqueOff or Wysong’s Dentatreat, or the things by C.E.T. Dental. Or you can try tooth wipes. And/or see this link: Dental Care for Cats:…
My vet actually told me that wet food is too fattening and that an all-dry food diet was the healthiest choice. I’ve only recently discovered exactly what you’ve just said. As soon as I knew, I switched to a healthy diet. So for me, I was misled by the person who’s supposed to help me keep my pets healthy.
There are just so many reasons people continue to feed dry…
Because they just don’t know.
Because it’s easier for them.
Because they still believe the myth that kibble cleans teeth.
Because they have been mislead by thier vet who knows NOTHING about proper nutrition.
Because they are to lazy to put thier cat on a feeding schedule.
Because they think thier cat will die if they don’t feed them every time they “act” like they are hungry.
Because they know, but still *think* it’s cheaper to feed bagged garbage from walmart.
And on and on and on. The sad thing is… is that so many people could prevent later illnesses and diseases (read: $$$$$$$$) by just feeding a wet food diet to thier animals.
I just saw someone post here the other day that thier cat had some illness that needed a special dry prescription diet bought only from the vet. And I just shook my head, while giving my answer, knowing full well that the whole thing could have been prevented by having fed a species appropriate diet all along. It’s sad really.
It’s the animals that suffer or thrive based on what we choose for them. They don’t even have a choice once we domesticate them. The depend on us to give them what they need to live long healthy lives and most people are really letting them down.
Comments on Why is it that people think that dry food (pellets/kibble) is good for cats? »
I agree with your 100%!
Most are all over-marketing political commercialism that gullible pet -owners fall for.
Cheers to you!
